ABOUT KALAALLIT AIRPORTS

Our history

Kalaallit Airports consists of three companies: Kalaallit Airports Holding A/S, Kalaallit Airports International A/S and Kalaallit Airports Domestic A/S.
The Government of Greenland founded Kalaallit Airports A/S on 1st July 2016. The company’s purpose was to build, own and operate airports at Nuuk, Ilulissat and Qaqortoq.

An organisation is created

The establishment of the company enabled the establishment of a single competent and professional organisation with relevant experience, with a view to exploring the possibilities of establishing two expanded international airports at Nuuk and Ilulissat and building a North Atlantic airport at Qaqortoq.

The Danish State becomes a co-owner

In connection with the Government of Greenland entering into an agreement with the Danish State to co-finance the airports at Ilulissat and Nuuk, the Danish State became the owner of 33.3% of Kalaallit Airports International A/S. Subsequently, in February 2019, Kalaallit Airports A/S was renamed Kalaallit Airports Holding A/S.

New companies are formed

On 8th January 2019, Kalaallit Airports International A/S and Kalaallit Airports Domestic A/S were established. International A/S aims to build two international airports at Ilulissat and Nuuk, while Domestic A/S aims to build a North Atlantic airport at Qaqortoq.

KAIR Holding A/S, which is 100% owned by the Government of Greenland, together with the Danish State International A/S, is to build Nuuk and Ilulissat. In return, the Government of Greenland owns 100% of the Domestic company, which is to build Qaqortoq Airport.

Mittarfeqarfiit joins KAIR

In 2022, the Greenlandic Parliament (Inatsisartut) passed a law regarding the transformation of Mittarfeqarfiit from a government-owned entity to a joint-stock company, subsequently incorporated as a subsidiary of Kalaallit Airports Holding A/S. As part of this process, Mittarfeqarfiit A/S was established on December 30, 2022, becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kalaallit Airports Holding A/S. This consolidation brought together all Greenlandic airport activities under the same corporate umbrella.

Boards of Directors

Greenland Airports consists of four companies: Greenland Airports – Mittarfeqarfiit A/S, Greenland Airports International A/S, Greenland Airports Construction and Greenland Airports Regional.

Each public limited company (A/S) has a Board of Directors. At two of the companies, Greenland Airports Construction and Greenland Airports – Mittarfeqarfiit A/S, there are four seats on the Board of Directors. The same four people are on all three boards. Of these, the management of the boards also consists of the same chairman and deputy chairman.

As a result of the Danish State co-financing the airport projects at Nuuk and Ilulissat, the Board of Directors of Greenland Airports International A/S was expanded by two positions, from four to six.

As part of the agreement with the Danish State, the Danish State appoints two of the members to the Board of Directors of Greenland Airports International A/S.

The Greenland Airports Group consists of four companies, with four associated Boards of Directors. The organisation of the project, including the establishment of an organisation with qualified employees, is anchored in Greenland Airports – Mittarfeqarfiit A/S. The construction work itself is legally and financially tied up in the other two companies: Greenland Airports International A/S, which is to build the airports at Ilulissat and Nuuk, and finally Greenland Airports Construction, which is to build the airport at Qaqortoq.
