Presentation of ideas for Qaqortoq Airport

The Government of Greenland wants to improve the country’s traffic infrastructure, which includes a desire to build a new airport at Qaqortoq.

The current presentation of ideas is the first draft of the Government of Greenland’s thoughts, ideas and needs with a view to deciding on realising the construction work.

The latest political statements (ref. 1 and 2) have formed the basis for the presentation of ideas, just as the results of previous studies and assessments have been included in the formulation of the presentation of ideas to a relevant extent, see the overview of the background material, point 9.

The presentation of ideas also contains information on the current stage of planning the airport, including a report of ongoing and forthcoming studies, as well as relations with the authorities.

The presentation of ideas statement primarily includes technical matters.

Nature impact assessment

As the new airport north of Qaqortoq is assessed to be a major building and construction work, a nature impact assessment of the project must be carried out in accordance with Landsting Act No. 29 of 18th December 2003 on nature protection. The nature impact assessment includes potential impacts on nature during the construction and operation of the airport.

Impact assessments on nature

The nature conditions described and dealt with in the nature impact assessment are stated in an initial description of the nature impact assessment for the project.

The specific nature conditions include:

  • Flora and fauna
  • Freshwater biology
  • Traffic conditions
  • Noise and vibration
  • Air pollution and emissions
  • Soil pollution
  • Surface water and wastewater
  • Cultural and historical interests

The assessments are based on the available information about the project activities in the construction and operation phase. The assessments of the impacts are an expression of worst-case scenarios. In the detailed planning of the project, the design and activities will be determined in detail, and the impacts may, therefore turn out to be less than assessed in the nature impact assessment.

The assessments are based on a method that identifies and assesses whether it is likely that there will be significant impacts on nature. An impact can be either positive or negative.
