Presentation of ideas for Nuuk Airport
The current presentation of ideas is the first draft of the Government of Greenland’s thoughts, ideas and needs with a view to deciding on realising the construction work.
Political statements have formed the basis for the presentation, just as the results of early studies and assessments have been included in the formulation of it to a relevant extent. You can see the overview of the background material in point 9.
The description contains information about the stage of planning the airport expansion at that time. The current and forthcoming studies, as well as relations with the authorities, are described.
The presentation of ideas statement primarily includes technical matters.
EIA report for Nuuk airport
The project to expand the airport at Nuuk is covered by the Government of Greenland’s Executive Order on the assessment of the effects on the environment of construction work and payment for environmental inspections (Executive Order No. 5 of 27/03/2013).
This means that the project is subject to an EIA and that a report must, therefore, be prepared for the environmental consequences of the project.
An EIA report must contain a systematic review of the project’s environmental consequences and be prepared based on an approved “Terms of Reference” plan.
The report must demonstrate, describe and assess the construction’s direct and indirect effects on:
-
Peoples’ use of the area, including potential health impacts
-
Fauna and flora
-
Soil, mountains, ice, water, air, climate and landscape
-
Material goods
-
The interaction between Nos. 1-4.
EIA approval for the expansion of Nuuk Airport
EIA approval has been granted in accordance with section 19 of the Government of Greenland’s Executive Order No. 5 of 27th March 2013 on the assessment of the effects on the environment of certain construction work and payment for environmental inspections.
The approval is given based on the information, reports, quantities and assessments that appear in the published EIA report and the consultation responses received.
Construction activities that in both the construction and operational phases are outside the conditions described by the EIA report and hence the EIA approval must subsequently be environmentally approved.
Amendment of the EIA approval for the expansion of Nuuk Airport
The Government of Greenland has approved that Kalaallit Airports Holding A/S can use and handle an anti-slip agent in a different way than originally planned, without requiring a new EIA approval.
This is because the water quality in Malene Bay is not adversely affected by the change.
The Government of Greenland is focusing on ensuring the least possible environmental impact on Malene Bay and the surroundings in general.
Environmental plan in accordance with condition No. 6 in the EIA approval for Nuuk Airport
This environmental plan has been prepared by Munck Gruppen A/S, which has entered into a contract with Kalaallit Airports A/S for the expansion of the new airport at Nuuk.
The environmental plan describes how the Munck Group sees the project executed in an environmentally sound manner.
Condition No. 6 of the EIA report forms the basis for the environmental plan:
“6. Before the construction work begins, Kalaallit Airports A/S must prepare an environmental plan for the project’s construction phase.”
